Soaring skies and dramatic clifftops. Delicate teacups and breathtaking vistas. The delicate intimacy of flowers in a vase, caught between breaths to be captured forever in a single moment in time. The almost eerie emptiness of a rural scene. A snapshot of a bustling plaza, its inhabitants immortalised in a single moment. Reflections. Perspectives. Pathways to nowhere.

What Is Realism?

In the world of art, Realism refers to a style that aims to represent objects or scenes as they appear in reality, without idealization or exaggeration. It focuses on accurate depiction of details and strives to capture the essence of a moment in time. Realist artists often use techniques such as precise brushwork, attention to light and shadow, and careful composition to create lifelike images.

About Steve Whitehead

When it comes to capturing incredible realism through the power of oil, Steve Whitehead is considered a master, and has been referred to as “one of the leading British Realist Painters of our generation.” This is a plaudit that appears to be no exaggeration; Whiteheads paintings are renowned for their incredible attention to detail, and he boasts an uncanny ability to breathe life into a dormant canvas, creating a story packed with vitality, colour and potential. From busy cityscapes packed with life, to moments of peace enjoyed through a window, Whitehead used his skills and expertise to create something incredible, and draws on a variety of traditions, from American Photorealism to English Surrealism and German Romanticism, and elements of his inspiration can be seen across his work.

As an artist, Steve Whitehead is methodical. He is committed to vising a chosen location, and bringing together a rich variety of images, sketches, notes, observations, photographs and colour comments, which are brought back to the studio and combined to create something incredible. With some pieces taking up to two years from start to finish, the dedication and craftsmanship is evident in every brushstroke of each painting.

Originally from Leicestershire, Steve undertook study at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and graduated with an MA in Fine Art while studying under the watchful eye of artist David Tinker. Steve then went on to continue his education at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and has gone on to win the Wales Open twice, and was prize winner for the Manchester Academy and Hunting Art Prizes exhibitions. His work offers an insight into the wonders of a captured moment, and the precious value that can be preserved in a single, simple detail.
