  • As well as buying first editions that were already signed, if a first edition book was acquired without a signature, the collector would write to the author and ask them to send one in reply, which they often did. Some of the signatures collected in this way were on bookplates - a decorative label pasted into the front of a book usually to indicate ownership, commonly used in private libraries.

  • Several more books from the same collector will be entered into upcoming auctions.

  • The collector’s family, based in the Midlands, contacted Ryedale Auctioneers after watching the television series The Yorkshire Auction House and seeing the sale of other large collections.

  • Ryedale Auctioneers’ book expert Jacques Tinkler, said: ‘what a fantastic collection, covering a wide range of popular English 20th century literature. A real pleasure to research and catalogue.’
